Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing

A marketing/advertisement technique which persuades internet users to forward it's material online to other people in order to gain word-of-mouth publicity.

Examples in films:

Inception

Most of the film was kept secret however the marketing team put together the 'Mind Crime' virtual game online and produced a series of "real" interviews with scientists who specialise in dreams.
Paranormal Activity

After the films limited release viewers were encouraged to "tweet their screams" in a short, 140-character-long review on twitter. This gained a lot of attention through social media websites.
Toy Story 3

Launched a unique viral video campaign with fake, vintage 80's commercials for the toy Lots o' Huggin Bear, internet videos such as Woody and Buzz on an IM chat, 70's themed interviews 'Groovin' with Ken' with with the Ken Doll and also 'Ken's Dating Tips'. There was also a Facebook application that allowed fans to purchase advanced tickets through the site while also letting them update their friends when they had.
The Blair Witch Project

A website was built that backed the claim that the film contained real actual found footage as this is the impression the film gave itself. They also circulated the rumours via online message boards. This made the audience even more terrified as in the back of their heads they thought it could be real.
